Amaury da Cunha @ Diagonal 2x16

Voies Off presents Amaury da Cunha’s work as part of the exhibition Diagonal 2x16, organised by the Diagonal Network and the City Hall of the 20th arrondissement of Paris.

Affiche exposition Diagonal 2x16 au Carré BaudouinThe Diagonal Network, of which Voies Off is part, was created in 2009. It gathers sixteen photography production and diffusion structures who support contemporary creation by organising artist residencies and by developping education programs about photography and image.

Nathalie Herschdorfer, curator of this event, has chosen to highlight works made during artistic residencies and producted by the structures composing the Diagonal Network.

Amaury da Cunha shows 5 pictures from the series Saccades. He works now at the Photography Department for the french newspaper Le Monde. He was invited by Voies Off for a production residency in march 2011, during which he concieved a photographic and acoustic installation. The artist signed for the first time an exhibit where images and sound mingle, to question the link between these two mediums.

Both photography and writing are part of his artistic activity. In particular, Amaury da Cunha wrote Saccades (Yellow Now publishing), Après tout (Le Caillou Bleu publishing), Les Oiseaux Favorables (Les Inaperçus publishing), and Incidences (Filigranes publishing). From an autobiographic inspiration, each image is a story full of mystery and poetry. There are presences, bodies without faces which question the hidden borders between reality and imagination.

In the series of images that I create since a couple of years, I never show directly my life, I suggest it, I hide it. Even if it’s not the main star of my work, thanks to it, I create beautiful subjects that I distort from its origins. The persons photographed are losing their civil status, the places have no more accurate geography, and the objects are willing to swap their qualities for others. Does that mean that I’m in fiction or in imaginary ? No, I am still and always in reality, even closer to its wild origin or to its twilight.
